Killer Tofu

For those of you who grew up in the 90s -- you may or may not remember the song "Killer Tofu" sung by The Beets.

Need a reminder?

FROM DOUG!

This song has been sung in our house a lot in past week. And the thing that urks me the most is that fifteen years from now, Matt is going to remember his 30th birthday as the birthday I cooked tofu lasagna and NOT as the year I threw him an amazing surprise birthday party.

In my defense:

I meal plan. I always have. As most of you probably know, I have been cooking out of a vegetarian cookbook. Until now, I have cooked with rice, beans, veggies, and salad. No tofu. No tempeh. No meat substitutes. Period.  Well the time has come that I have run out of recipes in the cookbook that I can cook without a meat substitute. I figured if we'd like tofu at all it would be tofu cooked in lasagna with cheese, pasta, and spaghetti sauce. The recipe called for eggplant in the lasagna and we has eaten it before with no problems. So trying tofu would have to be now or never........

On Tuesday night, I realized my eggplant was going bad so I had to cook it asap. It just so happened to be the night before Matt's birthday. Bad timing. I get it.

We ate it around five o clock the next day and I barely got two bites in before I gave up. We went out for pizza that night. Looks like its time for a new vegetarian cookbook.

He's so much happier with meat in his food.

Another note -- in my defense: Every. single. meal. I have cooked from that vegetarian cookbook has been amazing. Ask Matt. He has loved them all.

This one sucked.

No more killer tofu.

But the real story here is that MATT IS 30!!!!!!!!!!!

I threw him a surprise party on December 7th at Merchant in downtown Madison and it was so great to have our dear friends from Rockford (including Darren and Ben -- his two best friends of 14 years), our friends from Madison, both sides of our family, and our work friends from Little Gym AND American Family in one place. We had a great time and while I secretly think Matt knew all along (his surprise reaction was questionable), I was just happy to celebrate my husband and his wonderful birthday.

Fun Fact:

Matt shares a birthday with my second biggest love. And the other man who has a special place in my heart:

Old Blue Eyes.

My two favorite pictures taken that night:

The love of my life. Now a 30 year old!!!

And his two best friends:

And I posted this on Facebook, but I'm choosing to post it again.

My darling husband at his 30th and his two best friends of fourteen years. When I married him -- I married them as well. Everyone who knows these three, also knows at least one crazy story that involves them. Thank you for being such great friends to him, Ben and Darren. It wouldn't have been the same without you last night and I'm so happy you made it. Love you both.

In other news -- What happened in the last month:

Our dryer is broke
Our garbage disposal is broke.
My car needs new tires.
And I feel like all I do is work.
I need to get back to church. Its been three weeks and I'm going crazy.

I promise I won't go this long without blogging again. I've missed it so much.

To end my blog-athon (I'm exhausted!!) I'm ending with this wonderful story:

This morning I heard splashing coming from the bathroom on the main floor bathroom. I walked in and this is what I found:

See the water splashed all over the place?

She is lucky her Daddy loves her.

Next time, I'm just going to stick her in the oven.

She's such a ham.

And a cotton headed ninny muggins.
(Have you seen the Elf?)

Aww, now she's sad.

NEXT WEEKEND:

Matt and I are doing Christmas with The Boris' in downtown Chicago at....

The Drake Hotel!

So exciting!!

Court, Lubo, Matt and I will grab some drinks, exchange some gifts, and celebrate the 5th annual Boris/Fennel Christmas!!

On Saturday, Matt and I will go ice skating, take a horse carriage ride near the lake, see the Willis Tower (previously Sears Tower --- I've never been even though I lived there for three years!), and do some Christmas shopping off Michigan Ave!!

Happy Friday, ya'll

Enjoy your weekend.

Decorating for Christmas

Its the most won-der-ful time of the year..............

Just like Halloween and Thanksgiving, Matt and I LOVE Christmas. Its the best, most happiest, most cheerful time ever. Christmas has the best movies, the best music, and the best moments.

For you viewing pleasure I have compiled pictures of Matt and I (and Ernie and Lulu throughout the years). Enjoy.

2010: Christmas in our first home:

Holy Blondness.

Putting the star on the tree.

By this time, Lulu (as a kitten) had already chewed through a strand of lights and been locked in the laundry room. It only got worse from there. See below.

Matt took me to Wicked in downtown Chicago for my Christmas gift --- which was amazeballs.

2011: Our first Christmas in Wisconsin and only 10 days after we purchased our home:

Our tree in the apartment.

Then we closed on our house!

Look how young Matt looks!!!!!

Dad's home warming gift to us since it was so close to Christmas.
Notice the boxes in the background.
He must of thought (like any person) that I wouldn't have time to put up a tree.

I made time.......

Christmas Day!

2012: Two months before we got married:

A snowstorm hit only five days before Christmas that closed down American Family for two days!

Yay!!!

I got Matt his white, red, and blue CUBS themed Christmas tree for the mancave.

Ernie loved it.

Lulu loved the tree upstairs.

They both loved their Christmas shirts they got from Santa.

Our nieces came to help with Christmas cookie making....

And we also gave lots of love to our nephews, Zakery and Zander

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

This year! 2013: Our first year as husband and wife. And a new tree!

We decided to get out our trusty steed. Good ol' faithful. The tree we had for three years.

Notice: Lulu. The chewer.

We put it together.

Looking a little rough, huh?

Do you see the two UNLIT spots?????

Its almost like the lights were chewed......

The culprit.

I'm surprised this didn't happen:

So, we decided to say Goodbye to our first Christmas tree and go find a bigger, nicer one that had lights that actually worked.

Luckily, our little mouse rat-- I mean cat-- Lulu has learned to not chew wires. It was only a phase.

Knock on wood.

Like Now.

The new tree.

A Cashmere FENNImore. Like Fennel. Get it?!

Thats the real name! For real.

Peek a boo! See me in the ornament?

Oh, its just so beautiful

Don't forget about our Cubs tree downstairs!

See the bright white light in the left corner?
The tree.

Lulu eyeing the tree.

Stay away.

Luckily, this year -- she likes my light up presents.
(Easier to replace)

I also bought myself a nativity scene.

And an advent calendar

And surprise, surprise. Lulu is curious about it.

Matt also put out the lights.

Not Griswold style.

Even though that would have been awesome!

The prettiness of Christmas:

Our Trees:

And we wouldn't be "The Fennels" without Christmas themed pictures of.....

our cats: (Circa 2010)

Aren't they adorable?!

See back then (when they were little) they behaved for pictures. You shoulda seen them this year when we took pictures for our Christmas greeting card...... Yikes!!

You'll see those soon!

No worries.
