Last night we rushed Wally to the Emergency Vet Clinic in Janesville. Within minutes he went from Jolly Wally to a lethargic, trembling, vomiting, sick pup.
He scared the shit out of us. He was unresponsive. Was throwing up in the car. Had the worst diarrhea I had ever seen. Whining. Trembling. Drooling excessively. It was horrible.
Matt drove like a bat out of hell down I-90 rushing Wally to the vet. I sat in the backseat with him as he trembled and cried. So helpless and so scared. I fought back the tears as best as I could. Although, I was almost certain he was dying.
We were terrified.
We finally got to the ER Clinic and the nurse paged "Wally is here for triage"
I held him wrapped up in a towel as he drooled and leaked puppy poo (gross, I know) all over me. Once we got back to the examination room, I was a wreck. Wally laid on the floor curled in a little ball forming puddles of every bodily fluid possible around him.
Matt and I sat in silence and waited.
When the veterinarian came into the office, I started balling my eyes out. "IS HE OKAY??" "What is wrong with him???" I cried.
She examined him and went on to explain that he most likely ate one of the mushrooms in our backyard (common in Wisconsin). She recommended an IV so he wouldnt get dehydrated and a test for Parvo just to be safe.
Two nurses came in and tested him for Parvo. They hooked him up to an IV. He cried in pain. Next, they gave him an anti-nausea shot. He cried louder. We sat in the chairs -- wishing there was something we could to help him.
It would take thirty minutes to get the test results back. We waited. Wally slept.
Remarkably enough, he started to get better. He stopped drooling. He stopped "leaking". He slept. He trembled - as if he had the flu/chills.
The vet came in after about thirty minutes saying his test came back NEGATIVE for Parvo. YAY!!!!!!! By that point, Wally woke up and greeted the vet with a wagging tail. Such a relief.
We brought home some anti-nausea meds and have restricted his diet to very little water and rice. He is on the mend. THANK GOD.
Pappy is very concerned for his brother. He is keeping a close eye on him.
Matt and I stayed home today to make sure he is okay. Send your prayers. And THANK THE LORD. I don't know if I'm cut out for children. This was terrifying enough.
Damn those mushrooms.
